Vienne Jazz Festival 2008 – it’s starting!!!

Monsters in jazz meet at Vienne Jazz Festival, a popular jazz festival that is usually held at the end of June since 1985, every year. This year it starts on 28th June. Vienne is located 30 kilometers south of Lyon. The 2,000-year-old amphitheater is the location for this event, one of Europe's largest jazz events.

I’ve been there just once and it’s been a great experience. Big names in jazz like Miles Davis, Michel Petrucciani, Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stan Getz, Claude Nougaro played here.

Two years ago I went to the concert of George Benson in the largest Roman amphitheater in Europe. The acoustics and atmosphere were wonderful, an open-air jazz event that offers high quality and the finest jazz. George Benson did a great show.

This year the concerts announced are: Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Stefano Di Battista, Carla Bley, Dianna Krall, Nicole Slack Jones & The Soul Sisters, Brian Blade, John Patitucci & Danilo Perez, Salif Keita, Toumani Diabaté, Rosario Giuliani, Etta James & the Roots Band, Chico César, Buddy Guy, John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension, Jean-Luc Ponty band and many others.

I found this great video showing Marcus Miller playing at Vienne Jazz Festival in 2000 and I couldn’t pass up sharing it with you. Enjoy!

Vienne is a city of Roman origin, as certify some surviving monuments of this epoch reached until us:

The Theater

The temple of Augusta and Livia

The church of St Peter

Saint-Maurice Cathedral (Gothic)

Vienne's Roman Pyramid
of the circus
